Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. When she was a little girl, she was diagnosed with an obsessional disorder and suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford began performing in her teens and became an actor in the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one week she decided it wasn't the right fit for her. Ford then applied for a place for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who - was one of Ford's classmates. Ford's debut on TV was a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate first appeared on television in 1991and appeared on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly at the theater, ultimately being a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate began to gain attention due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
